01 | PET SUPPLIES

Let’s just be honest here, sometimes our pet supplies; kennels, food bowls, toys, beds, etc. can be a little bit of an eyesore.

I know this may sound a little too much, but hear me out before you bash the idea!

I love my fur babies and buy them more stuff at Christmas than I do my husband (jk). Nowadays there are quite a few options for making your pet supplies look a little more visually appealing.

You can find a decorative basket to keep your pet’s toys in, a pet bed that matches your home’s decor, and you can even find food bowls that you and your pets will love.

02 | YOUR DOORMATS

When is the last time you replaced your doormats? If yours is old, dingy, or outdated, it’s time to replace with a new one.

03| PERSONAL HYGIENE BOTTLES

I’m talking about shampoo, conditioner, body wash, scrubs, face washes, masks, hand soaps, etc.

Transfer everything into a matching easy to use set of bottles. (Frugal tip- when I pour my shampoo into a new bottle I add a little bit of water in the almost empty bottle, shake it up and pour it into the new bottle. I get every little bit out of there!)

04 | THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR FRIDGE

If you feel a bit overwhelmed every time you walk into your kitchen, what is on top of your fridge? What is hanging on the outside of your fridge? What is taped to the side of your fridge?

For years we have used our fridges to attach papers or store cereal boxes on top of. Maybe it’s time you finally clear the fridge and claim your sanity!

05 | AN ODD COLLECTION OF CONTAINERS

Who doesn’t love a container? The problem is maybe we have purchased too many different colors and styles over time that they really don’t make your stuff look that organized!

If you have a lot of plastic containers a simple coat of spray paint might be all you need to make the containers look like they are all cohesive with one another.

Maybe it’s time you updated your organizing bins and containers by buying all new matching ones or only purchasing ones in the future that look good together.

06 | DECORATIVE PILLOWS

Pillows are great and can really pull a room together! They also can be old, outdated, and overwhelm your home due to how many there are.

Simplify your home and your clean up time by reducing the number of decorative pillows you have.

07 | THINGS THAT SHOULDN’T BE ON THE FLOOR

Do you notice how many things end up on the floor that might be cluttering up your home on a daily basis?

Shoes? Maybe it’s time for a shoe rack.

Purses and bags? Maybe it’s time to install some hooks.

Toys? Maybe a large basket to collect toys in places like living rooms might be in order.

Once you start noticing these problem areas try to find a solution of getting all of these things off the floor.

Make it a goal for just furniture touching your floors, I promise it will make a huge difference.

08 | PLANT CONTAINERS

Plants can make or break your home. Everyone loves a little green here and there but when they are left in their plastic container straight from the local Home Depot they can easily make your home or backyard feel a little cluttered.

Maybe it’s time to finally transfer these plants into nice-looking pots!

09 | DECORATIVE ITEMS

I do not doubt you love your knick-knacks, I know I sure do, but they do cause a lot of extra clutter around your home.

Why don’t you take a walk around your home and analyze each decorative item you have. Do you really love this item or are you keeping it for some other reason?

Maybe you have decorations on top of your kitchen cupboards simply because you always have. What if you were to consider taking those decorations down to minimize the visual clutter?

The best part is you do not need to part with your decorative items, but you can experiment by taking some down and seeing how it makes you feel.

Who knows maybe they stay down for good or now you know you want to put them back up!

10 | BATHROOM TOILETRIES

No matter how simple your routine is I can guarantee you have quite a few toiletries.

Instead of keeping everything on the bathroom counter think about finding new homes for your bathroom essentials.

Get organizer trays for your bathroom drawers to create designated spots for the small things like hair ties, bobby pins, makeup, etc.

Make your under the sink storage space work harder for you by utilizing the vertical space. Two-tiered pull out plastic drawers and over the cupboard door hangers are just a few ideas to maximize this space.

Nothing says clutter more than seeing hairsprays, lotions, perfumes, toothpaste, and hairbrushes dominating your bathroom counters.

So clear those counters so you can clear your mind!

11 | LINENS

It is so easy to collect an abundance of blankets, pillowcases, sheet sets, towels, and more.

Make yourself some extra room in that linen closet by eliminating anything you don’t use. It’s okay to go down to two sets of sheets per bed or two towels per family member!

12 | PAPER CLUTTER

Oh, the dreaded mail and paper pile! We all know this struggle all too well.

To keep things organized the second you bring home mail, go through it, and recycle what you don’t need immediately.

Try creating a command center. A space where your calendar, mail, keys, etc. can be gathered in one organized spot of your home.

This can easily transform the paper mess into the most attractive organization system in your home!

13 | CORDS

Take a moment and carefully group cords and use Velcro or zip ties to bundle things together.

You can staple cords along the edges of baseboards that you know you will never need to move. Or tape your cords underneath tables or desks to prevent looking at a tangled mess sitting on the floor.

14 | PHONE CHARGERS

Phone chargers can be a bit of a nightmare.

An easy solution to deal with the mass hysteria of figuring out where is a phone charger is to buy multiple chargers so you can place a few in stationery positions around your home.

Once a charger has a designated spot you can then help manage the unappealing look by creatively hiding your phone chargers inside boxes or nightstand drawers.

15 | REMOTES

Most of us have more than one. TV remotes, BluRay player remotes, game console controllers, etc. all have a way of leaving a trail of clutter scattered around your family room.

Create a simple fix by investing in a container to keep all remotes together when not in use.

  5. I would also add decorations! Wall decorations, picture frames, random knock knacks, etc. as a professional organizer myself, it is something I see all the time. You mentioned floor stuff, in that same vein I would also say countertop items! Countertop functional items as well as DECOR! All flat surfaces!

  6. Thanks for the great article! I certainly agree with the cell phone cords mess. With four people with cell phones in our family, it’s a morass of cords everywhere. Hiding that stuff in a storage box is brilliant.

  7. Hi Wendy! Thank you for the kind words! I’m still battling with things on the floor, but every once in awhile I’ll finally figure out a solution to an ongoing problem and let me tell you, it feels good. 🙂

  9. You are so welcome Maegan! Now that you mention it my fridge is getting a little out of control right now, I guess I know what I’m doing this weekend 😉

  10. I love #5! This is actually something I am in the process of doing. I have shelves in my craft/laundry room which are organized, but my bins, baskets and boxes are all different colors and size, which made the room look chaotic. My daughter actually suggested I buy all uniform storage, and voila! The visual clutter is gone.

  11. Hi Marie!
Yes number 5, in my opinion, is a good one! I work with people that need help decluttering and this is the first thing we always do (go get matching containers) and it makes the biggest impact 🙂
