50 DIY Mudroom Ideas
Have you ever needed a drop zone for shoes, coats, & purses? These 50 DIY mudroom ideas might just be the solution you’ve been seeking!
The idea of the mudroom originated in snowy & rainy regions where you would track leaves, dirt, and snow slosh that would soak the floors. There needed to be space to take off layers without tracking mud through the rest of the house.
That’s where the “mudroom” was born.
These rooms created a new sense of purpose and ease for homeowners to manage unnecessary dirt & clutter.
Nowadays, these mudrooms have become an amazing high valued addition to any home, cold region or not! People caught wind of the functionality of a mudroom and with beautiful interior design choices, it’s no wonder everyone wants one.
Mudrooms are no longer a dark drab space for coats & muddy shoes. Now they act as a central command center for the entire family. From personalized spaces, family calendars, and covered bins there is now space for everyone and all of their things.
The best part… it not only functions perfectly, but it transforms unsightly items like umbrellas and goulashes into a beautifully organized space.
No two mudrooms are the same and with that said, creating your own DIY mudroom can be done in as little as a few hours or a week! It all just depends on what you want.
What should you put in your mudroom?
01 | A bench for putting on shoes.
02 | A door mat & area rug to trap dirt.
03 | Hooks to hold coats, backpacks, & purses.
04 | A bin or two to catch oddball things like umbrellas, hats, sports equipment, etc.
05 | Shelving. You could use cube storage, floating shelves, or built-in custom shelving and cabinets to help keep everything organized.
Don’t forget about home decor, lighting, baskets & bins, rugs, and even accent walls! The sky is the limit for how you wish to design your mudroom.
What do you do if you don’t have a mudroom?
Not everyone has an entire spare room to dedicate to a mudroom. Luckily though, there are so many clever ways to create mudrooms in small spaces that will work! Check out some of the great ideas.
01 | Take off the door of a closet near the front of the house or the garage. Paint or wallpaper the interior, add shelving, hooks, and a bench and you got yourself a built-in mudroom.
02 | Think small! All you really need is just enough space to be able to sit. Oddball spaces next to front doors, in nooks, and in corners might be all you need to make a mudroom happen.
