01 | IDENTIFY YOUR HOME OFFICE

A simple, but important step to not neglect. What do you want for your home office? Here are some ideas to help you identify your space.

  • All work and no play. You need your office to be a serious place where you can focus on important tasks and keep all important documents.
  • The family office. Everyone in the family can use this space freely. A place to do homework, a place where everyone can see social calendars, or a place to pull out the art supplies for a fun project.
  • Comfort and inspiration. You crave an office that will inspire you to finish your novel or has a cozy nook to crack open a book.

So the questions is what do you need your home office to be for you?

02 | DECLUTTER TIME

So now you know what you want for your home office, now it’s time to declutter anything out of that current space that does not fit your vision.

The easiest thing to start with is to remove anything that for sure belongs in a different room. Kids’ toys, exercise equipment, extra blankets, boxes of things that should be in the attic. Whatever it is for you, declutter it now.

Home office’s have a knack for being filled with tons of office supplies! Well, duh… it’s an office.

The problem is with office supplies we often end up with an overabundance we will never use.

This is your opportunity to declutter ruthlessly through your office supplies. Be brutal. Do you need a shoe box filled with pens? Do those markers actually work? If you haven’t used those manila envelopes in last five years are they worth holding onto?

Declutter down to the essentials!

03 | CLEAR THE SPACE TO CLEAR YOUR HEAD

Although difficult, clearing a room completely to the bare bones is one sure-fire way to get it completely re-organized to your liking.

We all experience a sense of “tunnel-vision” when it comes to our homes. We never think about what that desk might look like pushed to the middle of the room because we are so accustomed to it being pushed into the corner.

With a nice clear space to work with you have the rare opportunity to look at your home office with a new set of eyes.

Think about some of the benefits you can get if you take the time to completely empty the room.

  • You can paint the walls a new fresh color.
  • You have the opportunity to give the room a very deep clean. Think baseboards and steam cleaning the floors!
  • Can’t afford new furniture? Why not re-surface or re-paint your existing furniture for a new look?
